Rental Reform - the chance to keep pets

The Renters (Reform) Bill made its way to parliament last week. It has to be debated and passed, and it could be years before the new rules come into effect, but it promises the biggest reform of the rental sector in a generation.

Tenants are expected to be granted a legal right to have a pet in their home. Landlords will not be allowed to "unreasonably refuse" a request for a pet in the home.

Currently, not many Landlords accept pets in their properties because of the higher risk of damage.

Under the Bill, Landlords will have the right to insist that a tenant has pet insurance to cover any potential damage and this is likely to cost the tenant hundreds of pounds a year.
